Opel Blitz 3,5-36 & 3,6-36

The Opel Blitz 3,6-36 S was certainly the most well-known and best 3 tons lorry of the Wehrmacht. A platform with wheel houses and high dropsides was made for the Wehrmacht as the first special design. There were benches fixed to both sides. Only the rear dropside could be opened. This variant was mainly used as personnel carrier by motorised infantry units.

This Opel Blitz 3,6-36 S was damaged by enemy fire. Note the cut-out for the fender on the lower edge of the side plates of the engine bonnet. This edge was straight on the all-wheel driven model. The platform of this vehicle corresponds to the second design made for the Wehrmacht. Benches could also be fixed on the platorm. The dropsides could be lowered on three sides.

Beginning in 1941, the Opel Blitz 3,6-36 S was made with a simplified platform with lower dropsides and plug-on boards. Lashing eyes were fitted on the dropsides in three different heights. The tarpaulin on this vehicle was fitted to the lowest lashing eyes.

The late production model of the Opel Blitz looked quite passable compared to other makes. Only the rear fenders were dropped and smaller headlights were attached. The photo shows how inexpediently an overly white winter camouflage coat could be during unsettled weather.

Radio vehicles with one piece superstructure based on the Opel Blitz 3 ton lorry were rare. Later, these vehicles were replaced by vehicles with unified box-bodies – see the photo below. This vehicle was photographed on the Crimea in December 1941. (Photo: German federal archive via Wikimedia Commons; License: Creative Commons BY-SA-3.0-gb)

Opel Blitz 3 tons lorries were used for the most diverse tasks. This one is an Opel Blitz 3 tons S type with standard box body as radio vehicle at the airport Tazinskaja.

The exact usage of this Opel Blitz 3,6-36 S with box body could not be clarified until now. Most probably it is one of the numerous variants of the Kfz. 305 of the Luftwaffe.

The Opel Blitz 3 tons S with Kfz-Aufsetzkran 3t - attachable 3 ton motor vehicle crane - was a rare vehicle. This one belonged to a field aircraft work of the Luftwaffe.

The Flugbetriebsstoff-Kesselkraftwagen (Kfz. 385) - an aircraft fuel tank lorry - based on the Opel Blitz 3tons S had the open standard driver’s cab of the Wehrmacht.
