Opel Maultier, Erprobung, Hoppe

About 4,000 Opel Blitz 3.6-36S / SSM Maultier were manufactured. This type worked in the best way. The photo was made during the testing period of this developmen. The mudguard in front of the running gear was missing on early vehicles. The road wheels of a common type had four holes.

The spoke wheels on this Opel Maultier had an unusual design. Interrestingly, the mudguard in front of the running gear was also missing on the illustrated vehicle. This vehicle was used as tractor for a leichte Feldhaubitze 18. (Photo: German federal archive via Wikimedia Commons; License: Creative Commons BY-SA-3.0-gb)

The vehicles of the Maultier series were simpler constructed and less expensive compared to the normal half-track vehicles. Due to their similarity to normal lorries, they were versatile. They were used as transportation vehicles, as towing vehicles and as self propelled guns. Less often, they were equipped with standard box bodies and were used as ambulances.

This Opel Blitz 3.6-36S / SSM was converted to a self propelled anti aircraft gun by mounting a 3.7 cm Flak 36/37. The chassis was overloaded with this purpose. Because the service time of such vehicles extended only to some weeks or months, this fact seemed not to be of consequence.
