The Essen based company Ludewig manufactured special omnibuses for the Wehrmacht commencing in 1939 (model W 39). The vehicles corresponded widely to the civilian model. Solely the interior was adapted to the military use and the side windows got a simplified design. On the left side of the car body, a spare wheel was flush-mounted in the area of the driver’s seat (see the upper photo).

In the course of time, the car body was more and more simplified. Any decoration was omitted and the construction became more angular to simplify production.

Around 1943, a widely simplified car body was introduced which was made of fibreboard to a large extent. Even the roof-rack was omitted on the illustrated 1944 model. Until 1944, Ludewig manufactured 2,880 exemplars of the Opel Blitz omnibus with the Wehrmacht superstructure.
