The Funkkraftwagen - radio motor vehicle - (Kfz. 17/1), abbreviated Fu. Kw. (Kfz. 17/1), came into existance in the mid 1930s by the seperation of the Fu. Kw. (Kfz. 17) into several subvariants. The box body with only one antenna on the left side and no other additional equipment mountings was typical.

Beginning in 1942/43, radio vehicles with standardised box body based on the l. gl. Lkw. (o) - light cross-country lorry (commercial) - of the types Mercedes-Benz L 1500 A, Phänomen Granit 1500 A and Steyr 1500 A were delivered. Most probably, they also carried the designation Fu. Kw. (Kfz. 17/1).
