A Sturmgeschütz - assault gun - based on the Panzerkampfwagen IV was developed with low priority beginning in early 1943. Not before the heavy bombing raid on Alkett in September 1943, which stopped the serial production of the Sturmgeschütz III, the priority was changed to high. In a short time, the superstructure of the Sturmgeschütz III Ausführung G was adapted to the lower hull of the Panzerkampfwagen IV. Already in December 1943, serial production could be started. From December 1943 to April 1945, altogether 1,141 exemplars of the Sturmgeschütz IV für Sturmkanone 40 (L/48) (Sd. Kfz. 163) were manufactured.
