Kübelwagen based on the chassis of the l. Pkw. (o) - light passenger car (commercial) - with an engine capacity of up to 1,500 cm³ were classified as leichter geländegängiger Personenkraft- wagen - light cross-country passenger car - (Kfz. 1), abbreviated l. gl. Pkw. (Kfz. 1). Chassis from BMW (3/15 PS, 3/20 PS, 309, 315), Hanomag (3/16 PS, 4/20 PS, 4/23 PS, Garant), Opel (P 4) and Röhr (Junior) were used. Beginning in 1938, chassis from Steyr (Type 250), Tatra (T 57 K) and Skoda (Popular 1100) were used, too. Early Kfz. 1 had only three seats. Later models had four seats and doors made of sheet steel.

Based on the Einheitsfahrgestell I für l. Pkw. - standard chassis I for light passenger cars - resp. Einheitsfahrgestell I für l. Pkw. Typ 40 - standard chassis I for light passenger cars type 40 - the leichte geländegängige Personenkraftwagen (Kfz. 1) had an engine capacity of up to 2,000 cm³. This model had four doors and four seats from the beginning on. It had an equipment box on the rear of the car body. In small numbers, there was also a similar constructed Kfz. 1 based on the chassis of the Mercedes-Benz Type 170 VK, which was classified as m. Pkw. (o).

The leichte geländegängige Personenkraftwagen (Kfz. 1) based on the VW Type 82, which was classified by the Wehrmacht as l. Pkw. Typ K 1, was the most numerous vehicle of this class.
