Indian Motorcycle Company

In the year 1901, the Handee Manufacturing Company was founded in Springfield. In 1923, the name was changed to Indian Motorcycle Company. Indian was the first manufacturer in the USA who manufactured motorcycles in series. For some time, Indian was the largest motorcycle manufacturer in the world. Mainly large voluminous models were made. In 1942, the production of civilian motorcycles was stopped due to the restrictions of war. Until 1946, only smaller numbers of motorcycles were manufactured for the US Army.
