At the beginning of serial production of the Sd. Kfz. 250, the company Gebr. Böhler & Co. AG in Kampfenberg/Styria – which had also manufactured a large part of the armoured superstructures for the Sd. Kfz. 253 – was not able to manufacture the armoured superstructure Panzeraufbau Sd. Kfz. 250E which was developed for the Sd. Kfz. 250. Therefore, Böhler received a contract for 400 armoured superstructures Panzeraufbau Sd. Kfz. 250/Z – which widely corresponded to the armoured superstructure of the Sd. Kfz. 253 – on 17th February 1941. Serial vehicles of the Sd. Kfz. 250 with Panzeraufbau Sd. Kfz. 250/Z were delivered until mid 1942. (Photo: German federal archive via Wikimedia Commons; License: Creative Commons BY-SA-3.0-gb)

The Panzeraufbau Sd. Kfz. 250/Z had an overhanging rear and a vision port in the rear door contrary to the Panzeraufbau Sd. Kfz. 250E. The vision ports in the steeper driver’s front plate were of the older type. Lifting hooks were fitted to the roof plates of the engine compartment and the crew compartment. A lower tool and equipment box were attached to the right side of the vehicle. There was a hole for an antenna base on the upper right rear. This was closed by an armoured plug.
