285 exemplars of the le. gp. Beobachtungskraftwagen (Sd. Kfz. 253) – an armoured observation vehicle - were manufactured from March 1940 to June 1941. It was officially introduced with the Kft. Anhang No. 42 of the A.H.M. 1940, Blatt 13 from 7th June 1940. These vehicles were used by assault gun units and motorised artillery units.

The crane on this Sd. Kfz. 253 is interesting. There was a wide range of such conversions due to a permanent shortage of special crane vehicles. On the other hand, the usage of an armoured vehicle as base vehicle was rather unusual.
