Only one prototype of the leichter geländegängiger Zugkraftwagen (Vskfz. 616) of the type KM l 4 was made by Krauss-Maffei in 1934. Further eight serial vehicles were manufactured by Büssing-NAG under the designation BN l 4. Constructive, this type had many similarities to the m. Zgkw. 8t of the type KM m 8 which was also developed by Krauss-Maffei.

Contrary to the model KM m 8, the model KM l 4 resp. BN l 4 had only three road wheels per side. The front mudguards were not swung to the rear. The designation le. gl. Zgkw. (Sd. Kfz. 6) was first introduced early in 1936.
