As a result of the experiences made in Stalingrad, a vehicle with heavy armament and armour was demanded. In late September 1942 it was decided that the 15 cm s.I.G. 33 should be installed in reworked Sturmgeschütze. The superstructure was developed by Alkett in short term. Already in October 1942 the first twelve vehicles were finished. Further twelfe vehicles followed in November. The vehicles finished at first were lost in Stalingrad. The other twelfe vehicles were assigned to the Lehr. Abt. XVII outside of the pocket. In April 1943, the remaining seven vehicles were incorporated into the 23. Panzer Division.
