The development of the Sturmgeschütz - assault gun - was started in 1936. Most probably in 1938, five vehicles of the 0-Serie - pilot series - were converted based on chassis of the 2. Serie Z.W. These are identifiable by the track drive assembly with eight road wheels. Serial production of the vehicle, now designated gepanzerte Selbstfahrlafette für Sturmgeschütz - armoured self propelled assault gun - (7,5 cm Kanone) (Sd. Kfz. 142), was started in January 1940 based on the chassis of the Z.W.38 with the new track drive assembly with six road wheels. From January to May 1940, 30 vehicles of the Ausführung A - version A - were manufactured. They were followed by 250 vehicles of the Ausführung B which were made from June 1940 to March 1941. During the production period of the Ausführung B, broarder tracks, new driv wheels and improved road wheels were introduced. Officially, the vehicle was introduced with the A.H.M. 1940, Blatt 20 from 7th September 1940, No. 969.

The last model armed with the 7,5 cm Sturmkanone L/24 was the Ausführung E. In total 284 vehicles of the Ausführung E were made from September 1941 to February 1942. The models A to E differed only in details. From the beginning on, the Sturmgeschütz had a frontal armour of 50 mm.
