In the years 1936 and 1937, altogether 184 exemplars of the kleiner Panzerbefehlswagen - small command tanks - (Sd. Kfz. 265) based on the chassis of the series 4a., 5a. and 7a. of the La.S. were manufactured. Contrary to the Panzerkampfwagen I (M.G.) (Sd. Kfz. 101) Ausf. B, it had no rotatable turret but a raised, closed superstructure. The commander’s cupola was not present at first. It was retrofitted, later.

The Funklenkeinheiten - radio remote units - formed in 1940/41 received at first the kleiner Panzerbefehlswagen (Sd. Kfz. 265) as radio control vehicles. The additional radio equipment was stored in an armoured box which was located behind the superstructure. An additional antenna was mounted on the roof of the superstructure. For better observation, a periscope of a Panzerkampfwagen 38 (t) was fixed into the left hatch of the commander’s cupola.
