A Jagdpanzer - hunting tank - armed with a 7,5 cm Kanonen L/48 was developed by VOMAG based on the chassis of the Panzerkampfwagen IV beginning in September 1942. The prototype was finished late in 1943. A limited 0-Serie - pilot series - followed in January 1944. Serial production started also in January 1944. Until November 1944, altogether 804 Jagdpanzer IV (Sd. Kfz. 162) were manufactured. The vehicle was protected to the front and to the sides by angular armor plates. The frontal armour had a strength of 60 mm. Beginning in May 1944, the frontal armour was increased to 80 mm. Beginning in June 1944, the muzzle brake was omitted.
