The development of the 7,62 cm Pak 36 (r) auf Gw. II Marder II (Sd. Kfz. 132) was started in December 1941. From April to May 1942, 150 of these vehicles were made based on the chassis of the Panzerkampfwagens II Ausf. D2, which should actually be used for the production of Panzerkampfwagen II (Flamm) (Sd. Kfz. 122). From June 1942 to June 1943, 52 vehicles were converted from Flammpanzer based on the chassis of the Pz.Kpf. II Ausf. D1. This combination resulted into an effective self propelled anti tank gun. The protection of the gun crew was insufficient. Problems occured during service because of the relatively high design of the vehicle.
