The Panzerkampfwagen II (Flamm) - battle tank II (flame thrower) - (Sd. Kfz. 122) was developed beginning in early 1939. For this development, the chassis of the Panzerkampfwagen II (2 cm) (Sd. Kfz. 121) Ausf. D was chosen. The few chassis of the Ausführung E were also used to make Sd. Kfz. 122. The first serial vehicle was finished in January 1940. Two battalions were equipped with each 42 of these vehicles. They served on the eastern front from summer to winter 1941. The Sd. Kfz. 122 had a small turret which was armed with only one machine gun. There were two small rotatable turrets for the flame throwers on the forward mudguards.
