The leichte Schützenpanzerwagen (2 cm) (Sd. Kfz. 250/9) was developed especially for the armoured reconnaissance units. The roof was closed and it had a turret which was armed with a 2 cm KwK 38 and a machine gun. The turret was adopted from the leichte Panzerspähwagen (Sd. Kfz. 222). The first three experimental vehicles were sent to the east front for troop trials in June or July 1942. The shown vehicle belonged to 2nd company of Pz.A.A. 14 of 14. Panzer Division. The photo was made in 1944.

Bundesarchiv_Bild_101I-702-0420-32A,_Russland-Nord,_Waffen-SS_mit_Kränzen,_SchützenpanzerSerial production of the Sd. Kfz. 250/9 started around the turn of the year 1942/43 based on the Ausf. This vehicle of a Panzer- Aufklärungs-Abteilung of the Waffen-SS had the Panzeraufbau Sd. Kfz. 250E. The three experimental vehicles were made on chassis with the Panzeraufbau Sd. Kfz. 250/Z. Beginning in March/April 1944, the Sd. Kfz. 250/9 was manufactured based on the Ausf. B of the le. SPW. The last exemplars were delivered in February 1945. The turret was simplified and had a stronger frontal armour. The same turret was also used on the 8-wheeled armoured car Sd. Kfz. 234/1. The Sockellafette – a pedestal mount – was replaced by a Hängelafette – a suspended carriage – with this turret. The turret of this Sd. Kfz. 250/9 Ausf. B was covered with a tarp. The weapons were dismounted.
