The Maschinengewehrwagen, schwer – machine gun wagon, heavy – (If. 3) was used for transporting to heavy MG 08 and the corresponding ammunition and accessories. The crews had to walk.
In the field, two additional Maschinengewehrhandwagen (If. 2) were towed. These were used to transport the machine guns and the ammunition into firing position.
