The STZ-5 had a payload of 1.5 tons and a pulling force of 4 tons. It could reach a top speed of 25 km/h. The Wehrmacht used this balanced vehicles for different purposes.

This German artillery unit made use of the Soviet vehicle fleet, extensively. On the left is a STZ-5 tracked-tractor, on the right is a SKhTZ-15/30 wheeled-tractor and in the middle is a ZIS-5 lorry. The towed gun is a normally horse drawn 10,5 cm le. FH 18.
