The Morris Motor Company was founded by the bicycle producer William Richard Morris in 1913. Morris opened its first automobile manufacturing plant in Cowley, Oxford. In the 1920s, Morris had already an excellent reputation as an automobile producer. In the 1930s and 1940s, this status could be expanded by additional purchase of further manufacturing plants as well as the introduction of the assembly-line production developed by Henry Ford. The brand became market leader as manufacturer of simple but more reliable and price attractive vehicles in England. Besides passenger cars, lorries were produced for the British army.
