Trial vehicles

Most probably in 1937, the corps of signals obtained two Sd. Kfz. 11 based on HL kl 5 chassis for trial purposes. The vehicles were used to develop the Fernsprechkraftwagen, vehicles for the building of telephon lines.

The vehicles had open driver’s cabs without doors and a crew compartment at the rear of the superstructure. An equipment compartment was located between. Rod pieces and folding ladders were carried along on both sides of the body. This variant did not enter serial production.

The Nebeltruppe - smoke troops - obtained Sd. Kfz. 11 with HL kl 5 chassis for trial purposes, too. Most probably, three vehicles were obtained. One chassis was used for the prototype of the Nebelkraftwagens (Sd. Kfz. 11/1). (Image from D 601+)

Besides the prototype of the mittlerer Entgiftungskraftwagen (Sd. Kfz. 11/2), the illustrated prototype of the mittlerer Sprühkraftwagen (Sd. Kfz. 11/3) was developed based on these chassis, too. (Image from D 601+)

Also this superstructure based on a leichter Zugkraftwagen 3t (Sd. Kfz. 11) was misidentified as the Pionieraufbau - engineer superstructure - in the past. But the unit inscription of the 3./Kp. of the Nebelwerfer-Lehr-Abteilung points into another direction. The 3./Kp. was arraied for the testing of the 15 cm Nb.W. 41 rocket launcher. Concluded by this, the illustrated vehicle is most proobably an early trial vehicle of the later Nebelkraftwagen (Sd.Kfz. 11/4), which was used - besides others - as towing vehicle for this rocket launcher type.
