The initial version of the schwerer geländegängige Personenkraftwagen (6-sitzig) – heavy cross- country passenger car with six seats – (Kfz. 21) based on the Einheitsfahrgestell für m. Pkw., which was made beginning in 1937, differed from a standard Kfz. 12 only in details. To create a larger interior, the equipment box at the rear of the superstructure was displaced more towards the rear. A noticeable step at the rear was the outcome.

Beginning in 1940, Horch made about 50 to 100 exemplars of the schwerer geländegängiger Personenkraftwagen (6-sitzig) (Kfz. 21) based on the type 901 cabriolet chassis of the m. gl. Einheits-Pkw with a much more comfortable car body. The car body’s were made by Gläser. Some of these vehicles were partly armoured. Some early exemplars had two supporting-wheels on the sides of the car body.

Sometimes this type of vehicle was designated as commander’s cabriolet. The vehicle in the two illustrated photos belonged to Colonel-General Heinz Guderian.
