Rochet Schneider was founded in Lyon for the manufacturing of automobiles in 1894. After the end of WW 1 mainly commercial vehicles were made. The production of passenger cars was stopped in 1932. A wide range of lorry types from 2 to 12 tons payload was offered in the 1930s. Most of the types were offered as type with lower payload (Achille) and with larger payload (Ajax) as well as with four- and six-cylinder petrol- and diesel-engines. Beginning in 1935 a three-axle version with high payload was offered, the Centaure. In 1936 new type keys were introduced (V = long-distance; M = commercial; C = short wheelbase; L = long wheelbase; A = cab over engine). Rochet Schneider manufactured lorries to a small extent for the French Army. The Wehrmacht took over a large part of these vehicles. Although Rochet Schneider was located in the not occupied sector of France, a contract for 15 to 30 vehicles per month was signed with the German Wehrmacht. Beginning in 1941 mainly vehicles with wood gas generators were manufactured.
