The Société des Moteurs Gnôme et Rhône arose of the merger of Gnôme and Le Rhône in 1915. Mainly, aircraft engines were manufactured. After World War I, also motorcycles were made. Several types of Gnôme et Rhône motorcycles were procured by the French Army. Many captured motorcycles were later used by the Wehrmacht.
