First thoughts about a heavy mortar which could fight against strongest fortifications were started by Rheinmetall in 1935. In 1937, the Ordnance Department allowed the development as a self propelled gun. On 2nd July 1940, the first finished Gerät 040 could be presented. Altogether six vehicles (I - VI) of the Gerät 040 - which was also designated Karl-Gerät - were finished by end of July 1941.
