In 1942, an order for 112 self propelled 8.8 cm Flak 37 was placed. The first trial vehicle was completed at the end of October 1942. From July to September 1943, a total of 12 serial vehicles of this 8.8 cm Flak 37 (Sf.) auf s. Zgkw. 18t – a self propelled 8.8 cm anti aircraft gun – were manufactured. The armoured superstructure was made of 14.5 mm thick armour plates. The vehicles were assembled by the Bad Oeynhausen based company Weserhütte.

In total 40 rounds could be stored in the boxes at the rear. During combat, two rests per side had to be folded down for reasons of stability. Due to the increased weight of the vehicle of 25 tons, the chassis had to be strengthened. All 12 serial vehicles were assigned to Heeres-Flak-Abteilung 304 of 26. Panzer Division. They were used in Italy from 1943 to 1945.
