There were demands for mobile armoured guns for supporting the infantry already at the beginning of the war. For this reason, altogether 38 15 cm s.I.G. 33 (mot S.) auf Panzerkampfwagen I (Sd.Kfz. 101) ohne Aufbau were converted by Alkett from February to March 1940. The largest part of the upper hull of the Panzerkampfwagen I (Sd.Kfz. 101) was removed so that a complete 15 cm s.I.G. 33 could be mounted. The now opened fighting compartment was protected to the front and sides by a large armoured superstructure. The vehicles were assigned to s.I.G. Kompanien (mot. S.) 701 to 706 which were assigned to each one Panzerdivision. The last vehicles were reported in 1943.
