Already in 1938, first attempts were made to improve the Panzerkampfwagen II in respect of the top speed. So contracts for the development of the Vk. 9.01 were placed. Besides the top speed of about 65 km/h, the vehicle should have a stabilised weapon system for the 2 cm Kw.K. and frontal armour of 30 mm. (Image from Wa 5 Sparkommissar, Wünsdorf)

The contracts for the production of a pilot series were placed in 1940. About 45 vehicles were delivered until late 1942. It seems that two vehicles were tested at the eastern front as part of the Panzer-Aufklärungs-Lehr-Abteilung already in summer 1941. A larger part of these vehicles was later used up in the rearwar area of the eastern front as part of various units.
