Already in 1937, Baurat Dipl. Ing. Ernst Kniepkamp started an initiative to improve armoured vehicles in respect of speed, armament and armour protection. Because Krupp was not interested, Kniepkamp worked together with Krauss-Maffei from then on who was already succesfull in the development of half track vehicles. The developments of Krauss-Maffei in the 3, 5 and 6 ton classes finally lead to the Vk. 6.01. Until September 1939 only one trial vehicle was made. A pilot series of 40 vehicles was delivered until 1942.
