The Panzerkampfwagen I (Sd. Kfz. 101) Ausf. F (Vk. 18.01) was created based on a demand for maximal armour protection. Krauss-Maffei developed the vehicle. Many parts like the track drive assembly and the tracks were identical to the Panzerkampfwagen II (Sd. Kfz. 121) Ausf. J. (Image from Wa 5 Sparkommissar, Wünsdorf)

A pilot series of 30 vehicles was authorised in late 1939 which was delivered until December 1942. The first vehicles saw action as part of the Panzer-Abteilung z.b.V. 66 in summer 1942.
