The leichter Schützenpanzerwagen (Sd. Kfz. 250/1) was used as armoured personnel carrier for a half-group in reconnaissance and Kradschützen battalions. The crew of six men had an armament consisting of two MG, four rifles and one MP. This Sd. Kfz. 250/1 with Panzeraufbau Sd. Kfz. 250E was photographed on the east front in winter 1942/43.

The second version of the Sd. Kfz. 250/1 was used for one heavy machine gun (s. MG) group. Normally, one MG was attached to the armoured MG mount. A MG Lafette 34 was available for the second MG which was stored outside on the rear plate. Often the first MG was mounted in a s. MG Lafette instead of the armoured mount to increase firepower. These vehicles were mainly used by reconnaissance and Kradschützen battalions, too.
