The leichter Panzerspähwagen (M.G.) (Sd. Kfz. 221) - a light armoured car - was the first vehicle of its class which met the demands. It had all-wheel drive, all-wheel steering and was fully armoured. The crew of two men had one MG 34 as main armament.

The experiences made in the first campaigns showed that the armament was too week. About 1941, the armament was strengthened by adding an additional 7.92 mm PzB 39. But this weapon was too week, too.

Early in 1942, some Sd. Kfz. 221 were rearmed with a 2.8 cm s. PzB 41 – a small anti tank gun with conical gun barrel. At a distance of 100 m, 60 mm armour could be penetrated at an angel of 60 degree. The illustrated vehicle is an Sd. Kfz. 221 of the third series identifiable by the newer standard vision ports.
