The Bergepanther - recovery tank on Panther chassis - was developed as recovery vehicle for the Panzerkampfwagen Panther and Tiger in early 1943. In Juny 1943, the first serial vehicles were delivered. These were Panzerkampfwagen Panther Ausführung D without turret. The turret ring was closed with a low superstructure which was covered with wood planks. Beginning with the second series of the Bergepanther, a higher rectangular superstructure made of sheet steel was mounted on the vehicle. The foldable dropsides were made of wood. The roof was covered with planks. In the hull under the superstructure, a 40 ton cable winch was mounted. To increase traction on soft ground, a spade was attached to the rear of the vhicle. 278 vehicles of this variant were made until February 1945.
