The development of a Jagdpanzer - hunting tank - based on the chassis of the Panzerkampfwagen Panther, which should be armed with a 8.8 cm gun, was started already in late 1942. The first prototype was finished by MIAG in October 1943. Serial production started in January 1944. Until April 1945, at least 415 Jagdpanther were manufactured.
