Because of the improvement of the armament of the Panzerkampfwagen IV, about 450 7,5 cm Kw.K. L/24 were left over. In early 1942 it was decided that these guns should be converted and should be mounted in the turret of the Panzerkampfwagen III. Therefore, a one-off production run of 447 Panzerkampfwagen III (7,5 cm Kw.K. L/24) (Sd. Kfz. 141/2) Ausführung N were manufactured from July to October 1942. After the production of the 7,5 cm Kw.K. L/42 had been restarted, the last 167 Panzerkampfwagen III manufactured from February to August 1943 were also armed with this gun.

From July 1943 to March 1944, 69 older Panzerkampfwagen III (5 cm Kw.K. L/42 and L/60) were re-armed with the 7,5 cm Kw.K. L/24. Vehicles of the Ausführung N were equipment with a new comander’s cupola with 80 mm thick armour and only one hatch as standard beginning in March 1943. Beginning in May 1943, additional Schürzen - armoured skirts - were mounted to the turret and the sides of the hull. Many older vehicles were retrofitted with these Schürzen.
